American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies

Session Proposals for the 54th Annual Meeting

Sheraton Centre

Toronto, ON Canada

April 4-6, 2024

The American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies (ASECS) is pleased to announce our Call for Proposals for our 54th Annual Meeting, to be held April 4-6, 2024 at the Sheraton Centre in Toronto. The Society, established in 1969, is the foremost learned society in the United States for the study of all aspects of the period from the later seventeenth through the early nineteenth century.

We are committed to fostering an inclusive and welcoming conference environment in which all members participate fully in the exchange of knowledge and ideas. We welcome scholars pursuing all aspects of eighteenth-century studies and in all careers and career stages: in graduate studies; in tenured, tenure track, or non-tenure track academic positions; in part-time or temporary positions in the academy; and colleagues in contexts beyond the academy including libraries, museums, publishing, and teaching, as well as independent scholars. Please join us whether you are a long-time member, or new to ASECS!

Our call for submissions has 4 rounds (see "Submissions Explained" for more details!):

·      Round 1, due May 15 (completed and closed): Call for guaranteed sessions by caucuses and affiliate society chairs

·      Round 2, June 1-July 15: Open call for session proposals by chairs (panels, roundtables, project sessions, special sessions) Link to follow

·      Round 3, Aug. 1- Sept. 15: Open call for individual abstracts to chairs’ sessions Link to follow

·      Round 4, Oct. 1-15: Open call for individual papers to become part of sessions (“rehoming” abstracts that were not accepted and inviting new individual papers) Link to follow

Informational sessions:

Want to know more about what makes a good session proposal, or how to apply to a session? The Program Committee will be hosting regular informational sessions that we'll record, as well.

The first will be Friday, May 26, 8am PT/11am ET. You can register for the meeting here: ASECS CfP Registration May 26

Feel free, too, to contact the Executive Director or the Program Committee by email, too!

Submissions:

We are collecting submissions again this year centrally via Google Forms.

Important reminders:

In addition to thinking about sessions (Round 2), abstracts (Round 3), and/or individual papers (Round 4), we also want you to be aware that next year's meeting location in Toronto could possibly present some travel issues depending on your passport or visa status. Please check the following well in advance of travel:

  • Is your passport up to date? If not, make sure you leave yourself enough time to renew it (in the US, allow for 9-12 weeks).

  • What kind of visa do you need? (Find more information here: Visit Canada; note the processing times and costs)

Please check with your colleagues and graduate students to ensure that any border crossings to and from Canada go as smoothly as possible. We need to make sure that everyone has enough time to get acceptances and letters of invitation as necessary - keeping on schedule with deadlines, especially, will help us reach that goal.
