FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE APRIL 2020
ASECS Announces Winner of Mentorship Award
The American Society for Eighteenth-Century (ASECS) is pleased to present its 2020 Award for Excellence in Mentorship to Rebecca A. Shapiro, associate professor of English at the City University of New York.
In 2013, Professor Shapiro founded the innovative mentorship program “The Doctor Is In,” a help desk open to all members attending the ASECS Annual Meeting. “The Doctor Is In” offers drop-in mentoring and a physical space where members at all stages of academic life can ask informal questions on diverse topics, from managing a dissertation committee to writing a book proposal, advocating for fair labor practices for contingent faculty and graduate students, balancing work and family, applying for fellowships, combatting post-tenure ennui, or transitioning to retirement.
Professor Shapiro is also a founder of “Ask a Professor” at CUNY and an associate editor of Lexicons of Early Modern English.
The ASECS Graduate Student Caucus Excellence in Mentorship Award was established in 2007. The American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies is a not-for-profit educational organization founded to promote the study of all aspects of the eighteenth century. It sponsors conferences, awards research fellowships and prizes, and publishes Eighteenth-Century Studies and Studies in Eighteenth-Century Culture. Information on the nomination process for the 2021 ASECS Graduate Student Caucus Excellence in Mentorship Award is available at www.asecs.org or by contacting the Business Office at asecsoffice@gmail.com.
