UPCOMING EVENTS

April 2021

Colonial Revivals and The Practice of Citizenship: A Roundtable with Penn Press

Tuesday, April 13

5:00 p.m. EST

The Library Company's Director of Research and Public Programs Will Fenton moderates a roundtable conversation with two honorees of 2020 First Book Award-recipient Lindsay DiCuirci and finalist Derrick R. Spires-and Walter Biggins, the Editor-in-Chief at the University of Pennsylvania Press, which published both volumes. This roundtable will place Colonial Revivals: The Nineteenth-Century Lives of Early American Books (Penn Press, 2018) into conversation with The Practice of Citizenship: Black Politics and Print Culture in the Early United States (Penn Press, 2019) as DiCuirci, Spires, Biggins, and Fenton take stock of the state of early American studies and the how research libraries and university presses can continue to support early-career scholars.

Philadelphia at the Table: Misadventures in Culinary Sleuthing with William Woys Weaver and Katie Maxwell

Tuesday, April 27

5:30 p.m. EST

Internationally-known food ethnographer William Woys Weaver reconnects with the Library Company's own Katie Maxwell, who has cooking her way through his culinary exhibit, The Larder Invaded, in a series of blog posts and video tutorials entitled What's Cooking at the Library Company. Maxwell and Weaver will reflect on the historical recipes that didn't quite work out and what they learned from those misadventures. Hosted by Will Fenton.

While the Library Company of Philadelphia is physically closed, we have asked our staff, patrons, and research fellows to help us to sustain our learning community via a web-based, weekly program entitled Library Company Fireside Chats. Drawing inspiration from FDR's Depression-era radio broadcasts, these virtual talks will explore specific topics or themes in brief, accessible formats that anyone can enjoy for free. To learn more or to register, visit https://librarycompany.org/fireside-chats/.
