In recognition of the complicity of eighteenth-century musical life in the colonization and enslavement of peoples across the globe, as well as the discrimination against people perceived as physically, mentally, or otherwise different during the eighteenth century, the Society for Eighteenth-Century Music has founded the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) Committee to confront racism and prejudice both in the past and the present. The Committee will promote dialogue around the troubled history of the eighteenth century in both scholarship and pedagogy and will initiate action toward dismantling institutional structures that allow its insidious legacies to continue. Please see below for two opportunities to get involved in the DEIA working groups. As well, we notice you haven't yet renewed your membership for 2021. Research Working Group
The SECM Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility research working group warmly invites you to attend its virtual organizational meeting on Monday, February 8 at 7:30 pm Eastern. The group will provide a forum for those who research underrepresented communities and geographies in the long eighteenth century to exchange ideas, to solicit feedback, and to share sources. We hope to expand the scope of eighteenth-century scholarship while dismantling structural power and oppression in it. Research working group members do not need to join SECM. Pedagogy Working Group
The DEIA Pedagogy Working Group seeks to foster inclusive pedagogical practices in teaching music of the long eighteenth century as it relates to issues of difference. Membership in SECM is not required to participate in the Working Group. Activities of the Working Group include, but are not limited to:
Compiling a bibliography of articles and book chapters that have been eye-opening for students and teachers and/or have fostered productive discussions of these issues
Sharing and creating lesson plans, class activities, syllabi, and other resources that will help teachers, scholars, students and performers of eighteenth-century music
We will hold an online meeting in early February 2021 and we invite you to come brainstorm ideas, projects, and pedagogical approaches with us. If you have a class activity or resource that worked well and would like to share it, please get in touch. We plan for the resources developed by the Pedagogy Working Group to be available open access on the SECM website.
