Founded in 2008, the project is a collaboration between universities in France (Paris-Nanterre, Paris IV Sorbonne, Rouen), the USA (MIT, NYU), and Canada (Victoria). The project is built around the manuscript registers kept by France’s first national theatre company since its foundation in 1680. This singular archive is unique for the period in both the variety and detail of information and in its comprehensive coverage (1680-today). The registers focus on the company’s everyday operations - revenue, expenses, programming, administration - but likewise inform more broadly on the theatrical landscape of the period. Following in the footsteps of a number of previous projects working at the intersection of theatre history and the digital humanities, the CFRP aims to invite an exploration of ancient theatre, renewed and expanded through digital methods, but which equally privileges a critical, humanistic, and performance-oriented reading. The CFRP brings together research, artistic creation, and participative pedagogy; the website reflects this diversity and presents an array of tools and resources, notably including:

  • access to the digitized registers, and links to a complementary corpus of theatre criticism in the periodical press

  • data manipulation and visualization tools, each of which exploits a different facet of the register data (programming, casting, etc.), as well as full access to the project's databases

  • publications, creative productions, and news about upcoming workshops and events

  • A CFRP encyclopedia of theatre history terminology
